A perfect day at the very end of summer.  Thanks Doug & Nancy for continuing to host the RED club’s highlight of the year. This was our fourth annual summer couples dinner. The sky was clear and starry, the food superb, the conversation well lubricated and the wine was consistently excellent. Thanks to everyone for pitching in on the pot luck dinner. We welcomed Chris & Alex, and we bid Kevin au revoir!

At the bottom of this page is a list of the wines we enjoyed.

Wine List (with some reviews)

Fontodi 2004 Chianti Classico

WS Score: 88 -- Juicy black currant, floral and light oak character. Medium- to full-bodied, with sturdy tannins. Ripe, meaty and almost earthy. Best after 2006. 12,000 cases made. –JS

RP Score: 90 --The estate’s 2004 Chianti Classico shows the pedigree of its superior vintage. A dark ruby, it offers gorgeous aromatics along with plenty of clean, vibrant red cherry fruit and an almost weightless, super-elegant personality. It is not to be missed. Anticipated maturity:2007-2012.

Mas du Soleilla 2006 Coteaux du Languedoc La Clape

WS Score: 94 -- Rich dark fruit and spice aromas lead into concentrated flavors of kirsch, dark cherry, plum pudding and spice. The powerful finish is filled with espresso and baker's chocolate. Intense. Best from 2010 through 2014. 650 cases made. –KM

Maloy O’Neill 2004 Lexicon Paso Robles

Gigondas 2003 Domaine du Roucas de St Pierre

RP Score: 87 – 89 -- A fine effort with excellent concentration, impressive elegance, medium to full body, and attractive floral, raspberry, and cherry characteristics mixed with a stony element, this 2003 Gigondas will drink well for 10-12 years.

Arzuaga 2001 reserva

RP Score 91+ -- The 2001 Reserva, from a great vintage, is composed of 95% Tempranillo and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in French oak for 26 months. This still backward wine is opaque purple in color with a brooding nose which reluctantly gives up notes of pain grille, smoke, earth, blueberry, and blackberry liqueur. Medium to full-bodied, with outstanding flavors, concentration, depth, and length, it remains tightly wound but all the components for further evolution are present. Give it another 5 years of bottle aging and drink it over the following 15+.

Clos des Papes 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape

WS Score: 93 -- Lots of black currant, mineral, grilled herb, olive paste and bittersweet cocoa notes. A sinewy texture up front steadily puts on muscle and flesh through the back end, allowing additional hints of chestnut, tar and grilled beef to emerge. A beauty. Drink now through 2015. 9,000 cases made. –JM

Marco Porello niebbiolo d’ Alba

Loring Wine Company 2005 Pinot Noir Clos Pepe Vineyard

WS Score: 92 -- Good intensity, richness and concentration, with excellent depth to the earthy, loamy wild berry and blueberry flavors, ending with firm, integrated tannins. Takes some time to open up, but once it does it's compelling. Drink now through 2011. 800 cases made. –JL

RP Score: 86 -- The 2005 Pinot Noir Clos Pepe Vineyard exhibits a medium dark ruby color along with a sweet bouquet of strawberries, cherries, loamy soil, and a hint of background oak. It is a refreshing, tart style of Pinot with medium body, not a great deal of concentration, but nice flavors, and a pretty, elegant personality.

Morgon 2005

Turley 2005 Presenti

RP Score: 91 – 93 -- The impressive, powerful 2005 Zinfandel Pesenti Vineyard exhibits a dark ruby/purple color, plenty of minerality, loads of bright, savory, black cherry and black currant fruit, and notions of pepper and crushed rocks. This is one of the deepest, richest, most full-bodied 2005s in this portfolio.

WS Score: 84 -- Tart and lean, with jammy cherry and pomegranate aromas and rustic red plum and roasted herb flavors. Drink now. –TF

Turley 2005 Hayne Zinfandel

RP Score: 89 – 92 -- While potentially outstanding, the soft 2005 Zinfandel Hayne Vineyard is not as concentrated as past vintages have been. Although typically a candidate for long term cellaring, I would drink the 2005 over the next 5-6 years. Blackberry, raspberry, and cherry fruit cascade from the glass of this full-bodied, pure, rich, medium to full-bodied Zin.

WS Score: 88 -- Offers lots of sweet and tart fruit, ranging from plum to rhubarb, with flavors that are nicely complex and focused. Has lots of savory and licorice notes, and the finish turns a bit rustic. Drink now through 2012. –TF

Riboli family vineyard 2005 cabernet

WS Score: 91 -- Fresh loamy, earthy currant, anise, sage, tar and minty tobacco scents are firm and concentrated, with ripe, chewy tannins that provide structure and depth. Drink now through 2013. 500 cases made. –JL

Rodney Strong Symmetry 2005

Foxen 2005 Sangiovese Volpino
