MAZZEI WITH DON
Six REDmen.
Six Italian wines.

One very hot August evening. Don shifted gears and we enjoyed the great indoors during the heat wave. David and Chris were in overseas lands, which left six of us to enjoy the wines from Mazzei. These Italians have been making wine since the 14th century. Yikes!
Don provided a tasting of six bottles, showing the broad range of this amazing winery’s output. Priced from $13 to over $100, they were nonetheless united by a definate wine-makers hand.

#1 – 2011 BADIOLA TOSCANA
WS: 86 pts. Smoke and berry aromas and flavors are aligned to a soft, open profile in this red. Fruity and straightforward. Sangiovese and Merlot. Drink now. 21,666 cases made.
#2 -- 2010 BELGUARDO MAREMMA TOSCANA SERRATA
RP: 89 pts. (Aug. ’10) -- The 2007 Serrata Belguardo shows a touch more depth and roundness than the 2008. Here the tannins are beautifully silky as they frame tar, smoke, red cherries and flowers. There is wonderful complexity in the glass to match the soft, caressing finish. The Serrata Belguardo is Sangiovese and Alicante that spent 12 months in French oak. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2013.
WS: 85 pts. (Oct. ’09) -- Sweet plum and raspberry aromas lead to a medium body, with bright fruit and a clean finish. Sangiovese and Alicante. Drink now. 6,000 cases made.
#3 -- 2008 MARCHESI MAZZEI ZISOLA
#4 – 2009 Fonterutoli Chianti Classico
RP: 89+ pts. -- The 2009 Chianti Classico is beautiful in this vintage. Sweet dark cherries, cola and spices caress the palate as this juicy Chianti opens up in the glass. The fruit tends towards the darker end of the spectrum and the style is decidedly modern, but it all works nicely here. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2014.
#5 -- 2005 BELGUARDO MAREMMA TOSCANA TENUTA BELGUARDO
WS: 92 pts. (Oct. ’08) -- This is deep red in color, with rich, ripe fruit and smoky, toasty oak. Full-bodied, with supervelvety tannins and a long, rich finish. Balanced. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best after 2011. 2,080 cases made
